Simulations of ionisation triggering

چکیده
We review recent pilot simulations that incorporate feedback from ionising radiation in SPH calculations of star forming clouds. In the case that the ionising radiation source is located within the star forming cloud, the inhomogeneity of the cloud significantly modifies the way that feedback operates compared with spherically symmetric cloud models. Inflow/outflow behaviour develops, combining accretion down dense filaments and thermally driven outflows that can remove many times the binding energy of the parent cloud. If the ionising source is located external to the cloud, we find evidence for triggered star formation but conclude that it is hard to find unambiguous observational signatures that would distinguish “triggered” stars from those created spontaneously.

Turbulent transport and its effect on the dead zone in protoplanetary discs
Context. Protostellar accretion discs have cool, dense midplanes where externally originating ionisation sources such as X–rays or cosmic rays are unable to penetrate. This suggests that for a wide range of radii, MHD turbulence can only be sustained in the surface layers where the ionisation fraction is sufficiently high. A dead zone is expected to exist near the midplane, such that active acc...
متن کاملReionisation scenarios and the temperature of the IGM
We examine the temperature structure of the IGM due to the passage of individual ionisation fronts using a radiative transfer (RT) code coupled to a particle-mesh (PM) N -body code. Multiple simulations were performed with different spectra of ionising radiation: a power law (∝ ν), miniquasar, starburst, and a time-varying spectrum that evolves from a starburst spectrum to a power law. The RT i...
متن کاملTheory and Application of Pulsed X-ray Induced Partial Discharge Measurements for HV-Equipment
The statistical time lag of partial discharge (PD) inception was eliminated by using short X-ray pulses (duration 50 ns) for triggering. It was shown that the X-ray pulses provide the necessary start electrons to start an avalanche by gas ionisation. Phase resolved PD (PRPD) measurements were performed at low electric field levels with self-produced spherical voids in epoxy samples. Even very s...
متن کاملCharacterisation of the muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment
A novel single-particle technique to measure emittance has been developed and used to characterise seventeen different muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE). The muon beams, whose mean momenta vary from 171 to 281 MeV/c, have emittances of approximately 1.2–2.3 π mm-rad horizontally and 0.6– 1.0 π mm-rad vertically, a horizontal dispersion of 90– 190 mm and momentum sprea...
متن کاملIonisation impact of high-mass stars on interstellar filaments
Context. Ionising stars reshape their original molecular cloud and impact star formation, leading to spectacular morphologies such as bipolar nebulae around H ii regions. Molecular clouds are structured in filaments where stars principally form, as revealed by the Herschel space observatory. The prominent southern hemisphere H ii region, RCW 36, is one of these bipolar nebulae. Aims. We study t...
